SWISS plans to completely phase out its Airbus A220-100 fleet by the end of 2027, as the airline shifts its focus to the higher-capacity A220-300 to improve operational efficiency and fleet standardisation.
Issues related to spare parts availability and maintenance processes for the Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines are also reported to have influenced the decision. Some A220-100 aircraft already withdrawn from service are being used as a source of spare parts to support operations of the A220-300 fleet.
SWISS received a total of nine A220-100 aircraft. Five have already left the fleet, while the remaining four are expected to be retired in the coming period. The airline will continue A220 operations with 21 larger A220-300 aircraft.
Originally developed as the Bombardier CS100, the A220-100 first entered the SWISS fleet in July 2016 and was introduced as a replacement for the Avro RJ100.
